Gibson Southern Jumbo Sunburst 1946 OHSC

This Gibson Southern Jumbo was built in 1945-46, and is in exceptional, nearly all-original condition; better than any 1940's Gibson we've seen to date. This one features the large script logo headstock (no banner), mahogany neck block (not poplar) and, pearloid (not celluloid) split parallelogram inlays, and an unbound mahogany neck, all which indicate the year of production is 1946, as there is no FON visible on the inside.

There are no breaks, cracks, or areas of separation; or evidence of repair thereof. The original braces are intact. The neck shows no signs of separation and does not need to be reset, as the neck angle is as it should be. The binding is great shape and shows no signs of separation. The top, back and sides show NO CRACKS - and the besides the absolutely GORGEOUS finish checking, the original gloss finish is very clean, overall, with only minor points of wear in select locations. It appears as though the bridge has been milled down as it shows a lower profile with smoother contours than most, but we do not see any evidence that the bridge was ever lifted / replaced.

The fretboard is outstanding shape, showing little to no signs of wear. The frets are in unusually good shape, but also appear to be original and have the vast majority of their life left. The original tuning machines have been replaced, but the non-functional original are included. The nut is in very good shape, and appears to have been replaced. The though the original saddle is low, the guitar plays very, very well with low, even action. A neck reset could correct this, but with the overall playability, and mostly original condition; in our opinion, it should be left up to the customer. The original inlays are intact with no signs of coming out. The original truss rod cover is intact but is missing the two original mounting screws. The pickguard and bridge pins appear to be original, and the original brown Gibson hardshell case is include!

The setup and tone of this Southern Jumbo, is nothing short of outstanding. Huge lows, pristine highs, and a dry sound that cuts through with lots of volume and clarity. The action is low, even and free of any buzz. Not only is this an incredibly collectable instrument, it is an AMAZING player.
